April – 4/2/12 − 4/6/12
Welcome back to one more exciting week full of spring adventures and Easter celebration. To start our week children and teachers worked together to replace our now big pupas into their new home: the butterfly garden. I personally think children are still amazed by this metamorphosis but won’t be until they grow to butterflies that they’ll realize the magic of it. However, they carefully watch and respect the insect’s life cycle.
One of themes of this week was the firefighter and his/her important job. Children received a basic, brief explanation about their job’s characteristics and how they use their hose to fight fires. We pretended to drive a fire truck with our classroom’s chairs and took turns to dress up and extinguish a “fictitious fire”. They all were kind of shy at the beginning, you can imagine, to see your teacher acting like there is something there that you can’t see but she insists to see it. Little by little they looked at each other and became my fellow firefighters helping me to attack the fire. Imagination doesn’t take to long to unleash and children suddenly where telling me where the fire was as I hardly managed to fight “the flames”.
After all the firefighter action our week turned into a pacific Easter celebration. Our eggs decoration, Easter baskets, children met the Easter bunny who was waiting for children to leave so it could hide Easter eggs and finally our Easter hunting. As our younger group used their little hands to rip and paint, some other friends helped us cutting and pasting paper for our projects. Our program gives our students the same experiences as they meet their own cognitively level to avoid frustration and withdrawal.
